Bottle of Gundlach Bundschu Rose

Tempranillo Rosé

Sonoma Valley

A serious, food-friendly rosé made for year-round enjoyment. Crafted from five acres of Tempranillo planted in 1993 in the cooler area of the estate, this wine offers layers of aromas and flavors from strawberry to brewed tea. Only available through the Bacchus Club and direct from the winery.

Philosophy

The original pink wine of Rhinefarm, our Tempranillo Rosé wine is crafted from our five acres of Tempranillo. The story goes that Jim Bundschu saved these vines from meeting an untimely end in the early 80’s. And we should all be happy about that since, compared to our Rhinefarm Rosé, it offers a more savory yet softer, fruity experience. The grapes spend 48-72 hours on the skins to create a darker wine with an earthy, robust profile, perfect for slightly heavier foods. Similar to when we craft our red Tempranillo, both Spanish and Davis clones are used, yet fermented separately and then blended together. This results in a dry, crisp European-style pink wine that should please a full crowd of folks.

Vineyards

Rhinefarm’s five acres of Tempranillo are planted on the valley floor, influenced by the cooler climes drifting in from the Petaluma gap. Its neighbors are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer. The vines were planted in 1993 with the Riscal, Mauro and UCD 2 clones and they yield four tons per acre most harvests.

The red grapes are harvested by hand in half-ton bins in the cool morning hours, then destemmed and gravity fed directly to the stainless steel tank where attain the wine’s characteristic dark rose color for 48-72 hours.
